Okay, Jeez, Is WOTC Just Getting Desperate Or What?

Ride some coat-tails and make a buck.
They do own all the art along with the IP so I guess they can do whatever they want, but come one, have a little dignity.

Well, the bus is cool but 30 years too late. Still desperate times call for desperate measures.

  1. In a way it's cool, but in a way it's also kind of pathetic and misleading.

I feel sorry for any returning grognards who buy the new Red Box to discover they just acquired a tedious miniatures combat game with pages of confusing errata to download.

  2. Uggh. At first I was excited. Then I realized it is still 4e...I will stick with Swords and Wizardry!

  3. I like the neo-retro look, but really? They take down all the old edition downloads, and refuse to support the old games in any way, but they're sure happy to take the imagery.

  4. They are, most certainly, getting desperate. I'm getting the impression of higher-ups at Hasbro cracking the whip in response to "underperformance" on 4E's part.

A perfect time for Mythmere and Goblinoid to start and advertising blitz!

  6. Could really care less. I remember leading Grogs wanting something like the redbox back and now that it has happened they are crying because it isn't the redbox they want.

That is the only sad part about all this.

  7. I don't see anyone crying Josh. And WotC can release whatever they want. If I want box set, I'll by Mr. Raggi's game.

  8. Or the S&W white box, but yeah. Ha$borg gets no more of my money.

  9. @Josh - I think what many of us (grogs?) hoped for (in my interpretation) was for WOTC to reissue the original box(ed) sets, thus acknowledging that there are many versions of the game we all love. That would attract the crowd who might want to get their kids involved in the version of the game they at one time played as a kid.

Sure what we have here is a box set but it's an obvious attempt to market to and manipulate on a sense of nostalgia only to find a shadow of the former game. Someday they may get it right and see the light of the treasure they really have but this just seems like a marketing committee's last gasp.

  10. Boxes are all well and fine, but it turns out their contents actually matter, too.

    Crazy, huh?

  11. My only regret is that I was too busy to storm Sunderpeak Temple on Sept 11 ... I would have loved to have seen just how old-school that adventure was.
